Crafting a learning tool for India’s Public Education teachers

Brief

Quest Alliance is a non-profit organization committed to equipping youth and educators with 21st-century skills through self-learning. Partnering with over 3,350 educational institutes across India, they focus on building educator capacity to create empowered learning environments.
Our goal was to design a scalable, self-sustaining tool that encourages educators to reflect, learn, and foster self-learning in their classrooms. Building on the in-depth qualitative research from Phase 1, this phase focused on product design and strategy to develop the MVP of the app.

Research-Driven Design

Our goal was to build a product that directly addressed the needs uncovered during research phase, creating a digital learning experience that truly supports educators.

Co-defining the learning experience with a product-first approach

As the Quest Alliance teams refined content and structured new learning pathways for educators, we worked alongside them to shape the product experience. Using insights from our research, we crafted an intuitive UX that supported both educator needs and evolving program goals. Our focus was on bridging learning experience with user experience, ensuring the app remained engaging, easy to navigate, and aligned with Quest’s vision for self-learning.

Iterative wireframing to facilitate content and learning design

The wireframes we created served as a foundation for the Quest team to shape the learning experience and content structure. They provided feedback which we incorporated into iterative design cycles, ensuring the app evolved in alignment with both user needs and program goals.

Collaborative decision-making

We actively participated in the decision-making process, co-writing PRDs with the PM to define key flows and requirements from the user perspective. While the Quest team focused on program and content needs, we ensured the design aligned with user insights, balancing both to create an intuitive and engaging experience. This collaboration helped shape the product to meet both program goals and user needs.

Early Usability Testing for App Flow and Content Validation

We conducted usability tests on mid-fidelity wireframes to validate app flows and the redefined learning content structure. These tests helped ensure the user experience was intuitive and aligned with the learning goals. Feedback from users guided adjustments to improve usability and content delivery, ensuring the app would engage educators effectively.

What worked:

  • Self-paced learning and goal-setting was understood and appreciated.
  • Ability to skip content was found useful and gave the users a sense of control.
  • Visual illustrations and personalisation were well-received.

What didn’t:

  • Complicated terminology and copy across the screens.
  • Users did not connect baseline results with the goal-recommendations.
  • Difficulty understanding progress charts, and quantitative results perceived negatively.

Platform redesigned for sustainable self-learning

The app was designed to be intuitive, approachable, and lightweight, ensuring educators with varying levels of tech comfort could easily navigate it. We prioritized clear copy and familiar layouts to help users move effortlessly through their learning paths and stay engaged with the content. By aligning the design with both user needs and program goals, we created an interface that supports educators' learning journeys while meeting client objectives.

Empowering educators with self defined goal-driven learning

REQUIREMENTS
Our research revealed that educators engage more when their experience is acknowledged. They prefer self-directed learning, not being “taught to.” Scalability was also essential to while ensuring the app could cater to individual needs.

SOLUTION
We introduced a baseline test, allowing educators to assess their strengths and improvement areas to build personalized learning journeys. This self-driven approach gives educators control over their journey and a personalised experience while requiring minimal human intervention from Quest.

Sustaining engagement through a simplified and self-paced learning journey

REQUIREMENTS
Our research highlighted that educators are often overwhelmed by teaching and administrative duties. They tend to rush through content just to check off tasks, so we focused on simplifying the journey and making it more enjoyable and give them the agency to learn at their own pace.

SOLUTION
We designed a guided learning path with progressive disclosure, progress tracking, and celebratory messages to enhance motivation. Self-pacing mechanisms let educators skip familiar content via a quiz, ensuring they stay in control while focusing on what they need.

Building a dynamic learning experience with varied content formats

REQUIREMENTS
The content needed to be engaging yet easy to consume. To avoid content fatigue, we focused on creating interactive formats that were varied and fun, ensuring that educators remained engaged beyond the training program. The aim was to keep them motivated by making learning feel rewarding and manageable.

SOLUTION
To ensure a dynamic learning experience, we developed a variety of lesson formats that accommodated different types of content- such as stories, card-based lessons, videos, quizzes, and more. These formats were designed with user engagement and cognitive load in mind, aiming to make content easily digestible while keeping educators motivated. By introducing variety and interactivity, we helped educators stay connected and interested in the content.

Enhancing learning through reflection & context-based activity modules

REQUIREMENTS
We discovered that learning often didn’t translate into tangible teaching practices, and there was a lack of self-reflection on teaching methods. Educators weren’t consistently self-evaluating their progress, hindering active long-term growth.

SOLUTION
To bridge the gap between learning and real-world application, we introduced activity and reflection modules. Activities encourage educators to conduct classroom tasks, capturing evidence of practice through images and videos. Reflection modules, include quizzes and prompts, helping educators periodically assess what they had learned and think about how they could apply those lessons to their own teaching contexts.

Creating a Seamless and Engaging UI

We focused on crafting a user interface that was both visually engaging and easy to navigate. By choosing a clean, geometric vector illustration style, we balanced warmth and professionalism, ensuring the design was approachable for adult learners. Additionally, we built a scalable UI design system, including a reusable component library, to support future iterations and maintain consistency across the app.

Developing an inclusive illustration style

We explored multiple visual directions before refining an illustration style that balanced professionalism with warmth. The chosen clean, geometric vector style integrated expressive human elements to enhance emotional connection. Our goal was to craft a visually engaging yet approachable experience—one that felt inclusive, contextually relevant to Indian educators, and resonated with adult learners while maintaining a professional tone.

Crafting an Engaging and Scalable UI Design System

To support future iterations and maintain consistency, we developed a structured, reusable component library. This library serves as the foundation for a scalable design system, ensuring a cohesive user experience across current features and future updates.

Outcomes

  • Defined and designed Version1 of a mobile app tailored to teachers’ needs, with a scalable foundation for future versions.

  • Transformed a basic resource library into an engaging, guided learning experience that tied back into real-world practical applications.

  • Iterated and defined the app through rigorous research and user testing with real Educators.

  • Crafted a fresh new visual style, along with a comprehensive design system to support consistent UI/UX across future updates.

This app is currently under development. Once rolled out in phases, it will be used by teachers in Government schools and ITIs/ VTIs across India.
